I just upgraded from Calibre 2.75-ish to 2.81 and ran a batch metadata download on items in my database with no previous match and it went horribly wrong.

A lot of entries got matched of with completely unrelated books based on the title name being mentioned in a comment to another book somewhere. Those entries got updated with new titles, authors, tags and comments and were basically replaced with a different book.

I went through them manually to try to restore them and noticed that for some of the book, the right data was available, just not as the first match in the list.

I think matching titles against comments and descriptions of books is a mistake but I cannot find a way to turn it off. I hope this is just a bug that can be easily fixed.

iMac has a mini wireless keyboard.
No Home and End keys.

I found into Calibre Viewer the params to customize the shortcuts.
So I can mimic the Ctrl+Home and Ctrl End equivalent to PC world.

I did not find how to customize shortcuts into the calibre main page.
The idea is to send the cursor at the top/bottom in one shoot.

Under El Capitan, fn+Down Arrow jumps one page.
And Apple+Down Arrow does not jump to the end.

Any solution ? TIA

[IOS] CC Can't find Calibre

CC is telling me that the device's IP address is something taht I know for certain it is not, so it cannot find Calibre either content server or wireless connection, because it thinks its on a different network. I've manually input the correct IP and its working for the content server... but its a PITA when I reboot the computer. Of course I could use dropbox all the time, but this is a problem which I think needs sorting.

IP address of device according to CC: 10.138.13.234
IP address of the device according to settings: 192.168.20.9

So there is no possible way that CC can find Calibre. Why is this IP set in CC???

Calibre on iPad?

Long time Android user and I've had Calibre Companion for years. Recently got an ipad and I see CC is not available in Apple's walled garden. Is there a way to easily sync my ipad with the Calibre library on my desktop?

And is there a way to do this without installing iTunes? As a PC user, I have grown to detest iTunes the couple of times I've installed it to use iPods. I really, really don't want iTunes (which I'm sure works great on Macs) on my PC.

So am I stuck with using Dropbox to make the transfer?

nach dem letzten Firmware update von Pocketbook vor etwa 4 Wochen erhalte ich in Calibre bei der Kommunikation mit dem Reader die folgende Meldung:

Trouble with Submitting to Smashwords

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to use Calibre to add a cover page to my ePub novel. It seems to work fine but when I upload the completed file to Smashwords I get the following message...

File 'META-INF/calibre_bookmarks.txt' in EPUB not listed in manifest!

I also get an email from Smashwords saying the following too...

I've looked online and seen a few remedies but I can't follow them, too complicated for me! Can anyone explain in really simple steps how to use Calibre to overcome these issues so that Smashwords can accept my book?

When editing metadata on multiple books, there is a "change title to title case" option. When editing metadata on a single book, there doesn't seem to be this option. Could a "change to title case" button be added to the single book metadata dialog please?

Diese muß ich umsetzen:

Ergebnis: <a href="../Text/Anmerkungen.xhtml#253">[253]</a>
Zur gefundenen Fußnote soll z.B. immer 47 addiert werden!

Hier das vereinfachte Beispiel:

Mit RegEx ist das nicht möglich, allerdings bin ich im Netz auf die Option:

Hi,
I'm an absolute beginner, and I literally don't have a clue about html and css.

I've converted a bunch of InDesign files to ePub, and everything looks fine except I realize that the spacing before and after paragraphs are almost non-existing in the ePub.

So I'm looking for a fast and easy way to add some extra space, preferably by cheating so I won't have to learn anything about ebook editing. :thumbsup: (Not just because I'm lazy; I've only got this one book and I'm never ever going to write another, so it's just not worth it to spend too much time.)

I found out that it's possible to simply add a in the code whereever I want an empty line (that won't make the entire file explode or something, will it?), so that's an option if everything else fails.

Only thing is I need to do it like a thousand times, so it would be really nice if there were some kind of automated way to do it. Also, a full line is a bit over the top; something like 3/4 line or so would be perfect...

Hello.

Recently I have been trying to convert some EPUBs to PDFs using calibre through the command line and have some questions.

Is there a way to set a base font but have it be overwritten if the EPUB has other base fonts set? I'm using --embed-font-family and it works like how I want with EPUBs which don't have any style or embed fonts but I'd like it to ignore that option if it finds styles with set fonts. The manual says it might get ignored but that doesn't seem to be the case. It does ignore it for some of the text, like if there's italics it'll use its embed font instead of the one I set, and the one I set shows italics fine in other documents without embed fonts. Without that option (--embed-font-family) all the embed fonts get rendered fine.

I'm also currently facing an issue where some images get split (they bleed into the next page). When using the UI conversion this doesn't happen. I tried using both (UI and command line) without any additional options and (I think) with the default settings on the UI and it generated different results.
Any idea what might be causing this?

And is there any options for handling images at all? Like making images ignore the set margins.

Newbie question about and tooltips

I frequently run into this problem - trying to implement a style by including the <Style> section inline with the HTML code (Section0001,xhtml), works the way it's supposed to.

Placing the <Style> section in a blank stylesheet (Style0001.css), however, doesn't. For example, trying to form tooltips using code from https://chrisbracco.com/a-simple-css-tooltip/ or from http://netdna.webdesignerdepot.com/u...ltip_demo.html works only when the Style is inline.

I have also encountered this problem with styles unrelated to tooltips.

Any idea why?

Is it possible to remove indentation from the first line in an ePub, while not changing the following ones (that should be indented)?

My text is based on a Word paragraph style that looks correct in Word as well as InDesign, while the ePub has these indentations... :bookworm:

Physical book cataloging, design choices -- experiences? suggestions?

(Yes, I've reviewed the dozen other threads; none of them go quite where I'm headed.)

I'm contemplating several different options on how to include my physical books in my Calibre catalog. FWIW, I already have good ISBNs for all the pbooks, along with some tags associated with each.

Some of the debates I've been having, that I'd be interested in experience, suggestions, etc:

Preserving the true ISBN is important to me, for the pbooks. For the ebooks, not so much. As discussed at some length by kiwidude here (updated link), Calibre does some aggregation/collation via Worldcat when updating metadata, and the ISBN in the ID can get updated (along, of course, with adding an ASIN that may or may not be the exact edition, etc.) I have experimented with adding my own identifier paper_isbn, and with adding my own custom column; I can argue both ways, though I'm leaning toward custom column.

More generally, is there a way to constrain the metadata updaters to be edition-specific? Ideally, I could set this based on a criteria, next best would be setting the settings and then updating just the pbooks. (For example, for ebooks, I just want a representative cover. For pbooks, I'd rather have no cover at all, if the exact edition cover is not available.)

I've gone back and forth twice on whether the same ebook and pbook should be one record or two. (And this is a sub-question of whether pbooks should be in their own Calibre library.) At the moment, I'm leaning back toward separate records in a single library.

(For example, I have two physical copies of Heinlein's Glory Road, which are distinct physical editions: 0425048659 and 0671877046. I also have an ebook, currently cataloged as 9780765312228. In my current thinking, these would be three rows, so that the two pbooks could have their own #pbookISBN column entry, and so that each could have its distinct _location_* tag.)

This does, however, make a hash of duplicate book detection, although I'm thinking that Virtual Libraries will help here. It also makes rating and marking as read (which I currently handle with a custom date column) a bit untidy. Very interested in thoughts on this.

Hi everyone,

Hope someone can help me with a problem I'm having creating a customised column in Calibre. I have created 3 columns (#plot, #pace and #character) which each contain integer values between 1 and 5.

I now want to create a new column #score which is calculated from the average of the 3 columns. And just to complicate things I want to add a weighting of 1.5 to plot. (i.e. #plotx1.5)

This looks possible but I'm getting lost in the manual. Grateful if anyone can help out.

I am new to Calibre and it's Editor. I would like to know if there is some way, besides using the <pre> tag, to insert tabs at the beginning of a paragraph. I guess because of my age, I am just 'old school' and believe that a paragraph should start with a Tab. Maybe it's because for so many years I read print books, I know "hardcopy ewwww", and most of them the paragraphs started with a tab.:chinscratch:

Adding a Style to an entire book

I am not very knowledgeable about HTML editing and CSS and such. I have just found a style that can be added to an HTML document in the <head> block, and it will apply the style to the whole document. This one kind of lets you have tabs, using the em; HTML tag.

I don't want to have to put this into the header of every page manually, and I don't know how to write a CSS stylesheet. I was wondering if there was any way to put this in one of the text files and have it work in all the rest of the text files.

Here is an example of the code :

If you put that into the header, you can have tabs with the em; tag, just by putting <tab1> your paragraph of text </tab1> in each spot where you want to have a tab in the text such as the beginning of a paragraph.

I asked another question about having Editor insert tabs here in the forum, but if Editor can't do that for me then I can use this. I will put it in the <head> of every page if I have to, was just hoping that there might be some way to put it in one page and have it work for all of the rest. Thanks

Error converting very large ePub

I have an ePub containing 380MB of pure text. It's 58 million words, no graphics, in 1806 chapter files. It's a computer-generated ePub; most of the pages are duplicates. (I'll explain in a postscript why I'm doing this ridiculous thing.)

Anyway, when I try to convert it to Mobi with Amazon kindlegen, it crashes with a Segmentation Fault, so I thought I'd try Calibre. I'm using the command-line tool, ebook-convert, and it seems to be going so well, until eventually it crashes, too, with this error:

I get it, I get it, it's too big. But what is too big, exactly? Is it the number of words? Number of chapter files? Is there a way I could predict when a book will be "too big" for Mobi and avoid those limitations?

P.S. OK, I promised I'd explain what I'm doing. What I'm doing is building a "choose-a-path" gamebook. In traditional "choose-a-path" books, like "Choose Your Own Adventure," every page is unique, and the experience of reading the book once is quite short. In other gamebooks, like the "Fighting Fantasy" gamebooks, choices you make early on in the story can affect what happens later in the story; they ask you to take notes with pencil and paper. After exploring the book, you might find a door, and the text would say, "If you've found the key, you can unlock the door and turn to page 127."

In the interactive-fiction community we call these two types of gamebooks "stateless" or "stateful," where the idea is that what you write on the paper is the "mutable state" of the game world.

It turns out that if you don't have very much mutable state, you can generate an enormous stateless gamebook from a stateful gamebook. The input source for this ePub is only 30,000 words, 208KB of text, but from that we generate an ePub that tracks your choices as you play, so you don't have to use pencil and paper. The result is 58 million words, but it also compresses surprisingly well, 19MB.

Anyway! I'd like to take this monster and convert it into a Mobi file; if that's not possible, I'll have to reduce the amount of tracked state to make it fit the constraints of the platform.

But to do that, I'd need to know what my constraints are! How big can I go, in which dimensions?
